This is the first book I have read in the “D.I. Kim Stone” series and it is the 13th one! The series might be titled after the team leader Kim Stone, but Angela Marsons has created a dynamic cast of characters to support Stone. Deadly Cry is a diverse mystery fiction novel which starts with the team slightly occupied by other things than murder.

Penn, a Nigerian, is still emotionally recovering from his mother's death and now having the sole responsibility of taking care of his autistic brother. Stacey, a Black lesbian, is planning her wedding which takes place in less than a month. Someone who the team has worked with before is still dealing with PTSD. Plus the higher ups have been talking to Stone about a possible promotion that she isn't certain that she wants.

This is when Marsons throws in the first mystery and then a murder. Oh...I should probably say that it starts on page 2...the mystery. Marsons waste no time before you are hooked on the possibilities. Then another murder happens. Do not let the number of chapters scare you because Deadly Cry moves quickly.

I did not guess the culprit, but I did figure out one of the key plot points before the team. I was screaming at the book - in my head (laugh). I have to be honest though I figured it out due to a “shuffle” (hint).

D.I. Kim Stone will be a frequent visitor to Phoebe's Randoms as I plan on starting at the beginning. The cast created by Angela Marsons is a winner and I cannot wait to see more.

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
