There's a serial killer loose in Los Angeles and the local authorities need help fast. For some reason the killer has been leaving a string of maddeningly arcane clues at each crime scene. Each of these clues, it seems, is an indecipherable roadmap to the next murder.
Onto the scene comes L, the mysterious super-sleuth. Despite his peculiar working habits, he's never shown his face in public—but this time, he needs help.
Enlisting the services of an FBI agent named Naomi Misora, L starts snooping around the City of Angels. It soon becomes apparent that the killing spree is a psychotic riddle designed to specifically engage L in a battle of wits. Stuck in the middle between killer and investigator, it's up to Misora to navigate both the dead bodies and the egos to solve the Los Angeles Murder Cases.

I am Beyond Bewitched with this book! This is one of the best story I have read in a long time!!!
I don't recommend reading this one if you at least haven't watched the anime. There are some crucial details that you wouldn't be able to understand; therefore, read the manga o watch the anime first.
85/100
Surprisingly great. I was always on board, but I had a couple issues while reading. However, the twist at the end completely fixed every problem I ever had- THAT is how you write a truly unexpected plot twist. It makes you look at the entire story completely differently and makes a surprising amount of sense. Though I will say if you're going to read this you need to watch death not first. Not only does it rely on you having an understanding of the events of the anime, as well as answering questions you'll have after finishing it, AND it spoils the anime several times, but the show is also simply even better.
SO.GOOD
Not only did the author capture L's personality and mannerism really well but the story was also very engaging. I started reading before bed and before I knew, I was half way through it.
I was so happy to find that Naomi was one of the main characters and worked alongside L in this case. She was briefly present in the anime but I absolutely loved her and was left wanting more by the time she was out of the story. I did have some issues with her, though. The fact that she was supposed to have a great deductive mind but came to most of the conclusions with the aid of the other detective bothered me to no end later we find out that she was being manipulated by said detective but it still bothered me.
Also, I really REALLY liked M as a narrator. He kept making references to things from the anime as well as his upbringing under the influence of L's brilliance, which made the story more interesting.
Finally, the case itself was quite interesting. All the twists and turns on the mystery and the clues were something I had never read before. Also, I did NOT see coming the twist at the end. I love when books do that.
