A gripping narrative, based on the author’s interviews with 24 senior German officers captured at the end of World War II, reveals how a superbly armed and trained body of fighting men could suffer such a calamitous defeat. The prisoners offer candid assessments of German military performance and the nature of the fallen regime, explaining for the first time much that happened during the war and how the German military machine served Hitler well—and the nation badly.

A very interesting read for me, I particularly found fascinating the interviews of german officers shortly after the war and letter extracts from german soldiers in the field during it until the final defeat of the Wehrmacht.
