I just finished Disturbing the Dead by Kelley Armstrong - A rip through time book 3 and here are my thoughts!!
Mallory Atkinson has settled into Victorian Scotland, a much different life from the homicide detective she was back in the present. She is used to the body she inhabits and her employers know she is really from 150 years in the future and not the housemaid they had originally employed.
Knowing she was a police officer in her time, Dr Duncan Gray makes her his assistant to his unique business of undertaking and unofficial medical examiner. Their friendship deepens and something more that neither will admit.
When Duncan's sister invites them to a mummy unwrapping, they decide to go even though no one really wants to. Sir Alistair Christie is no fan of Duncans. When Sir Alistair seems to be missing when the mummy is due to be unwrapped, Duncan and Mallory are asked to step in. They are not prepared for what they find within the wrappings.
I had been waiting impatiently for this installment... It is exactly what I was hoping for. I want to say things but I don't want to spoil it. I love that the book gives a nod to the Edinburgh seven. 7 women who fought for the right for women to matriculate. It was a huge thing back then. One of the things I love about this historical mystery is the way the story weaves itself into knots so you never really know who did it until the reveal. I am usually pretty good at figuring these things out but with this series.... Not so much! The pace is brilliant and the tone is of the book shifts and changes as the twists and turns through you around like a rollercoaster.
I love watching the relationship between Mallory and Duncan deepening and evolving. It's beautiful and honest. Slow and thoughtful. The characters get better and better with every book. I love Isla. I think she might be my favorite character. Something else I really enjoy is the fact that even though the women are all in the past, they are all still strong and fierce people. Duncan also treats the women in his life with reverent respect and admiration which is amazing.
I am a real fan of historical mysteries now thanks to this series. The one question I need answered, which is the explanation of how Mallory time traveled still is yet to be explained and I am now impatiently waiting for book 4.
5 stars! Brilliant, just brilliant.
