As is made clear in the newly written introduction to this 50th anniversary edition, this is Doctor Who meets Starship Troopers as written by Agatha Christie. Which is at least an interesting premise.
It's quite fast paced, with good characterisation, both of the troopers and of the Doctor and his companions (Ben and Polly, in this case). Given the ‘Starship Troopers' meme, it is rather more physical than much of the First Doctor's era normally is, although, for me at least, it managed to carry that off quite effectively. Granted, it's not exactly deep, but it's a fun read.
There are some bits of experimentation with the writing, most notably a chapter written in choose-your-own-adventure style. I suspect this worked rather better in the physical book than it does on the Kindle, it being much easier to flip pages in the former. But one can hardly blame the author for that.
