This entire story takes place in a prison cell as Jamie is questioned about the Doctor by an interrogator desperate to convince him that the TARDIS travellers have misread the situation on an alien colony world, and are fighting on the wrong side. And, on one level, this is what the story is about - have they made a mistake, and if so, what will the consequences be? We all know (unlike the interrogator) that the Doctor is acting out of the best of intentions, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's right.

But there's much more to the story than this, because Jamie is perceiving events in the cell out of chronological sequence. We hear things from his perspective, which does at least remove some of the complexity - although, if one wanted, it would be easy enough to play the tracks in a different order to see how the interrogator is experiencing things. Either way, it's not one for those who like nice straightforward stories, especially since the Doctor and a mysterious fourth party are, at times, speaking through the bodies of the two main characters.

So we have two actors playing four characters in a non-linear story about deception and (to a lesser extent) free will. Without the time trickery, I think it would still work, although it is, of necessity, not an overly complex story once you strip that element out. Personally, I loved it, but it's probably not the sort of thing you'd want to listen to while doing something else.
