Although described as a collection of essays, the book is a lyrical meditation on nature, and at times reads more like poetry than prose. The author writes about his visits to the woods over a period of a year, capturing the changes that take place. He discovers that he's never really alone–the birds and animals are watching him, and the surroundings are as alive as he is, if not more so.
