Okay, I finally got it. The climax was worthwhile but I was unfailingly surprised that I was at all pleased.
Its gritty Boston as a quiet bartender makes a journey of faith through the violent world around a drop bar in an area that probably bears a striking resemblance to the Dorchester that Lehane grew up in. Similar to Elmore Leonard in capturing the patterns of speech of the subculture. And, hey, its a movie too. Will have to see if I can catch that to see how it was interpreted for the screen.
The type of writing I've come to except from Lehane, interesting plot and characters.
