A young witch must pass a coming-of-age quest or risk losing her magic forever in this enchanting fantasy -- perfect for fans of Kiki's Delivery Service and Aru Shah and the End of Time -- now in paperback! Sometimes all you need is a pinch of magic... Eva Evergreen is determined to earn the rank of Novice Witch before her thirteenth birthday. If she doesn't, she'll lose her magic forever. For most young witches and wizards, it's a simple enough test: One: Help your town, do good all around. Two: Live there for one moon, don't leave too soon. Three: Fly home by broomstick, the easiest of tricks. The only problem? Eva only has a pinch of magic. She summons heads of cabbage instead of flowers and gets a sunburn instead of calling down rain. And to add insult to injury, whenever she overuses her magic, she falls asleep. When she lands in the tranquil coastal town of Auteri, the residents expect a powerful witch, not a semi-magical girl. So Eva comes up with a plan: set up a magical repair shop to aid Auteri and prove she's worthy. She may have more blood than magic, but her "semi-magical fixes" repair the lives of the townspeople in ways they never could have imagined. Only, Eva's bit of magic may not be enough when the biggest magical storm in history threatens the town she's grown to love. Eva must conjure up all of the magic, bravery, and cleverness she can muster or Auteri and her dreams of becoming a witch will wash away with the storm.

Cute story for the kiddos. Nearly all the leading roles are female, there is danger, magic, neat animals, and a quest.
The end gets us ready to read the next book.
Very cute! The Kiki's Deliver Service inspiration is pretty heavy-handed, but I can see where the author is going and diverging from that initial inspiration by the end. I can see how this will be even better in the next book, which I plan to pick up. I don't love the rhyming incantations because it feels extra childish and bizarre to read an adult saying cute little sayings, but other than that the magic system was actually quite interesting! The friendships are wonderful too. The biggest problem I had was that almost everything and everyone felt developed at, or just below, surface level. I think as the series goes on this could definitely improve though!
Such a beautiful and magical (not semi-magical) book!
I received a free copy of this book through @MTMCTours and I am so happy that I signed up for this bookstagram tour. Many thanks to the author for giving me the chance to read her amazing book.
Eva's journey begins with her doubting herself because she has only a pinch of magic, as opposed to the other witches and wizards in their realm, who posses greater amounts of magic. But that doesn't stop her from pursuing her dream: to become a Novice Witch before she turns thirteen.
Eva embarks on her beautiful journey, that takes her to the sea-town of Auteri. There she makes friends she never would've imagined as a part of her life, she discovers her true self and she helps everyone around her with the little amount of magic that she has.
Eva has such a strong personality and I loved reading this book from her point of view, because she made everything funnier and more interesting. The writing style is amazing and it made me turn page after page, until I finished the book. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. I love the format of the book, the fact that each chapter has a small, gorgeous illustration in the beginning.
Even though this book is a middle-grade one, it felt so much more powerful than that. It has some beautiful life lessons, my favourite one being that we are so much more than we believe and we can do so many things, even if sometimes we may consider ourselves to be weak.
