I enjoyed this one a lot. It was a fantastic read. This isn't surprising as every book I have read by this author has been fantastic. That said, it was also my least favorite of the series. There was just something about this couple I couldn't connect with. Both main characters came across a little “meh” to me. Especially Jacob who I found a bit flat personality wise. But it happens. Not every book can be a home run and like I said even with that issue I still found it an enjoyable read.
~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~
As always with this author the writing was fantastic. It was very well paced, and I never felt the need to skim. The plot was engaging. The mystery aspect kept me guessing until the end. That said, I did feel like the “slayer” aspect was wrapped up a bit too easily and anticlimactic given the number of pages the author spent building it up. And the side storyline about Jesse Marks felt a little underdeveloped and could have used a bit more fleshing out.
~HERO~
Jacob...I liked him but I didn't love him. Like I mentioned above I found this character (personality) a little flat. I honestly can't even put my finger on why. He just didn't WOW me like some of this author's other hero's. He was a decent guy though. Alpha. Badass. Didn't appear to be a manwhore. He was kind of a jerk near the end though and his behavior towards Jewel pissed me off.
~HEROINE~
Jewel...I liked her more than Jacob but her character didn't WOW me either. She didn't come across as flat as Jacob did. She had more “personality” and maybe it was because I felt her character was a bit more fleshed out than Jacobs was. I am usually not a fan of detective (police) heroines, but Jewel didn't come across as over the top hard or a bitch. The author did a good job of balancing the strong police detective side with the softer vulnerable woman side.
~SIDE CHARACTERS~
There was a good cast of secondary characters in this one. Mainly characters and couples from previous WALKER SECURITY books and the TALL, DARK, AND DEADLY series. It's always nice to see little glimpses of previous characters we've read about.
~HEAT LEVEL~
Medium. This one was OK hot. It was a bit of a slow burn with no sex until halfway through the book. The sex scenes were suitably hot and lowish on frequency. I wouldn't say this was insta-lust. Maybe insta-attraction and even though I didn't think this couple was overly exciting they did at times have some good on page chemistry.
~ANGST LEVEL~
Low to Medium. I would say this wasn't an overly angsty book. There was some push and pull. A lot of inner thoughts about how they shouldn't or can't be together. A douche move (IMO) on the hero's part. There was no OW or OM drama. Neither were virgins. The hero didn't sleep around. The heroine ended things with a fuck buddy six months prior. No condoms but they did have a safe sex talk.
~IN THE END~
I liked it. It was a very good book that I had a few issues with. Did those issues take away from my enjoyment? A little, but honestly, not enough that I ever thought about not finishing it. Would I recommend it? Yes, totally and with that in mind this one gets a thumbs up from yours truly.
