Lee Mandelo dives into the minds of wolves in Feed Them Silence, a novella of the near future. What does it mean to "be-in-kind" with a nonhuman animal? Or in Dr. Sean Kell-Luddon’s case, to be in-kind with one of the last remaining wild wolves? Using a neurological interface to translate her animal subject’s perception through her own mind, Sean intends to chase both her scientific curiosity and her secret, lifelong desire to experience the intimacy and freedom of wolfishness. To see the world through animal eyes; smell the forest, thick with olfactory messages; even taste the blood and viscera of a fresh kill. And, above all, to feel the belonging of the pack. Sean’s tireless research gives her a chance to fulfill that dream, but pursuing it has a terrible cost. Her obsession with work endangers her fraying relationship with her wife. Her research methods threaten her mind and body. And the attention of her VC funders could destroy her subject, the beautiful wild wolf whose mental world she’s invading. A snooze fest if you will. FTS is about a woman named Sean who is a narcissistic scientist that has mommy issues and is weirdly obsessed with wolves. No, it isn't like that. It isn't like Bear. But the story was like unflavored chicken. I wish there was more added to it to give it SOMETHING.
It sucks that this wasn't good. Some good ideas but they're squandered so quickly and the emotional drama is so... separate and boring, and the relationship/sex parts were just... they needed to be tied in properly. I think this needed multiple editing passes, but frankly, it was boring, overwrought, preachy, and not scary! A sin for a horror novella. Everyone in this novella was boring and shitty and annoying in unfun ways.
A short well written science fiction that that explores personal relationships between humans as well as human animal interactions. It also explores the role of industry in the funding of scientific research. A lot of territory to cover. Warning one of the relationships is a lesbian relationship which is not all that different from a heterosexual relationship. Highly recommend the book.
