Animal adventures with the last human on earth, which has become an ecological dystopia.

PROS:
The writing:
This balance of ST's in-character, often authentically appalling expressions, with truly beautiful/worshipful descriptions of his ward and the nature around them, as well as the unique voice provided to other animal POVs featured briefly.
The commentary:
Climate change/environmental concerns, humanity as a destructive force
Living true to your own nature, being accepting of when your nature may not map onto those of your community, your predecessors.
Parents should let go of controlling how children turn out, your dreams are not their dreams, family means accepting differences
Living in fear not allowing to thrive, to change, improve circumstances
CONS:
Maybe I'm remembering wrong from first book but it seems the author took a (deceased) bit character and made up a backstory not hinted at before, feels like a retcon for added drama, horrible experience just to demand emotional response, more manipulative than genuine built relationship between S.T. and Dee.
Pacing issue: a point at which repeats of ‘run from danger, towards danger, hide from danger' and hearing over and over again about the gross variations of zombie mutants, becomes a little tiring.
⚠️ depression, animal cruelty, animal death, gore, SA(?)
