Frankly, the horror part isn't much scarier than some of the scenes in the [b:Widdershins 16128152 Widdershins (Whyborne & Griffin, #1) Jordan L. Hawk https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1352121658l/16128152.SY75.jpg 21952704] series, but the romance takes a backseat to the creepy stuff and the body count for named characters is higher. The story's monsters share almost equal billing with the horrors perpetrated by hordes of greedy white people destroying nature and indigenous people in their quest for gold.
