It takes awhile to slip into the rhythm of this fragmentary novel, and until the reader adjusts it all seems a blur, like looking too closely at a pointilist painting. Step back, look for the bigger picture, and it becomes clear. Schutt's style is breathtaking, and this is a fabulous book that impresses, but requires more effort to read than it should.
