A simply, but well written book. The author tells his story well, in a well paced and accurate manner. It is a fascinating story, and to be fair it is probably not a unique story, but that doesn't make it any less remarkable. It is sad to read about the waste of lives of those who did not make it through the prisoner of war situation after so many soldiers were captured so early in World War II. Captive (with numerous short bids for freedom) for six years, Peter Winter was certainly a recipient of some good luck, but his story proves that some people deserve their luck, and for someone who never gave up his passive, and sometimes active resistance, he certainly deserved his survival.
The author is also very quick to show respect to the civilians (especially of Crete, Greece and Poland) who offered so much assistance. Similarly he could identify those amongst the enemy who were humane and fair, while others were bullies and sadists.
A short book at just over 140 pages, but it tells its story well.
