One of the fondest memories of my childhood is watching one of those grainy VHS B-Movies, the grainier the better. There's something comforting about going to a place where you can just let your expectations go and binge on fun, hilarious movies. This book takes me back to those glorious days! From reading this explosive debut from A. Lee Martinez, I could tell that there was a lot of heart and soul poured into the making of this novel. Unlike the aforementioned B-Movies, this book has a higher quality plot and a smarter writing style.

If there is one thing I can commend on the author is how he's able to create such endearing characters. Now if someone would have said to me that there is a book that tells a story about two friends who are a vampire and a werewolf, I would have scoffed at that notion but Duke and Earl to me are more alive in between the pages than say an epic fantasy character from a thousand-paged book. These characters walks, talks and breathes! love these guys. With a supporting cast of a tough diner waitress, a girl next door ghost, a spirited dog, a teenage mistress of the old gods and her horny boyfriend, you can expect pages and pages of awesomeness!

This was a fast, fun and funny read. Something different from my usual read. Nothing more I could add to that. But during the times I've spend reading this book, I kept on thinking about those hours I've spend watching my favourite VHS movies from years gone by, and not regretting every single minute of it. Did I also mentioned that the book kicks ass?
