Laura Greenwood, yet again, recreates a character that is well known to readers into a heroine I can root for in Golden Wings. I will say though this book reads more like Survivor or The Purge due to the obstacles that Greenwood puts in Lina's way. Does Lina have to resort to hoping for someone to save her? Nope.
I have said this before and I will say it again: Greenwood creates heroines that you want to read to your kids. This story, though, you might want to wait until they are pre-teens as Lina has a rough go of it and there are some difficult themes that Greenwood confronts.
Homelessness is a difficult topic for anyone to talk about and Greenwood highlights the issues which people who live on the streets are subject to on a daily basis. There are no easy answers and Greenwood does not take the easy road. There is a happily ever after, but it is one in which Lina makes for herself. A great lesson in an even better story is another Greenwood trait in her fairy-tale retellings.
Take a trip with the fairies and see if Lina earns her wings, you won't regret it.
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
