I went into this book with a bad attitude. It was a book club pick; I don't like hiking, or camping, or really being outdoors at all unless it's on a patio somewhere, and I would never want to hike 2000 miles just for the heck of it. I live in SW Virginia, and the Appalachian Trail crosses nearby and is a big deal around here, and I have no desire to visit any part of it. So color me surprised that I enjoyed this for the most part, with Emma Gatewood's life story interspersed with her hike. It did get a little dull and dry in places, and parts of her walk (especially when it came to hiking the Appalachian for the second and third times) were very “this happened, then this happened,” but it made for a mostly interesting narrative about a topic that interests me in no way, so I guess that makes it a success.
