Guitar Notes is a perfect example of why it is a good idea to borrow a book before actually buying it. A while ago, I saw this at my local bookstore and really wanted to buy it. It seemed like it was the perfect story for me and it seemed interesting. I could tell that this was going to be a love story, but I can, at the very least, stand, and sometimes even like books of this genre. Regardless, I managed to resist this impulse buy and decided to get it from the library instead. Now that I have, I can say I am glad that I did. This novel may have some good points, but it isn't good enough to hold my interest for anything more than the time it took me to read it.
To get the good things out of the way: I liked that these two people connected over music. It is an element of a love story that one doesn't see that often. Another element of this book is how the characters connect through the guitar. It could make the readers want to play it and that is always a good thing. The guitar chords and songs in the back of the book help with this.
Sadly, everything else about this book doesn't work for me. Firstly, Tripp and Lyla have good chemistry together, but their relationship with other minor characters is filled with tired character tropes. The best friend Anna is a character who doesn't like Tripp for seemingly no good reason, other than the fact that he is no good for Lyla. Lyla's father just seems to be a stereotype of the hard pushing father. The writing is like fast food, it does the job but you don't remember anything about it after you're finished. This is sadly why I must give it a two out of five. There isn't anything memorable about this novel. You may enjoy it, but I will forget it in about a month.
