Howard Thurman had a strong desire for education, but in segregated Dayton, Florida in 1899, there were few options for him.

But with hard work, and with perseverance, and with the help of his family and friends, Howard Thurman was able to attend high school and, later, college.

One of the most powerful parts of the story takes place just as Thurman was preparing to leave for school on a train. He was told that he could not board with his trunk, that the trunk would have to be mailed, with an additional charge of three dollars, money Thurman did not have. Suddenly a man appeared and offered to pay for the three dollars for the boy. After the trunk was prepared for mailing, Thurman turned to thank the man, but he had disappeared. Thurman never saw the man again.

Inspiring story of a man who worked hard for his education.
