The illustrations are vibrant and beautiful here with a reminiscent feel to The Little Engine that Could. Huff and Puff are two little engines (front and back) that just have too much stuff and need to find a good place and person to give what they so not need.

When my budding reader saw this book, she snatched it up. For years I've been reviewing early readers and she glances at them and tells herself a story from the pictures and I read them aloud. However this was different.

She picked this one up and read it to me. AppleBlossom is five years old. We've been doing phonics for just barely one year. She knew most of the words with some sounding out and some she had to ask for help, but she definitely read most of the words herself. There was repetition enough with some new words that she started to recognize them as well as out it the decoding skills. Some earliest readers are just too full of sight words, but this one was the right amount of phonics with sight words.

The hardest bits for us were working on /ch/, /sh/, and /gh/. But it was great exposure!
