Gorgeous portrayal of a time and place and the people of the hill country. In the beginning, I thought the story lacked tension or complexity, but by the last half of the novel, I could see I was wrong. This novel is so much more than just storytelling. It is rich in symbolism and themes. I agree with other reviewers who call it great American literature.
