Immortality: A Love Story is the eagerly-anticipated sequel to Dana Schwartz's #1 bestselling gothic romance, Anatomy: A Love Story.
Hazel Sinnett is alone and half-convinced the events of the year before—the immortality, Beecham’s vial—were a figment of her imagination. She doesn’t even know if Jack is alive or dead. All she can really do now is treat patients and maintain Hawthornden Castle as it starts to decay around her.
When saving a life leads to her arrest, Hazel seems doomed to rot in prison until a message intervenes: Hazel has been specifically requested to be the personal physician of Princess Charlotte, the sickly granddaughter of King George III. Soon Hazel is pulled into the glamor and romance of a court where everyone has something to hide, especially the enigmatic, brilliant members of a social club known as the Companions to the Death.
As Hazel’s work entangles her more and more with the British court, she realizes that her own future as a surgeon isn't the only thing at stake. Malicious forces are at work in the monarchy, and Hazel may be the only one capable of setting things right.

This is the sequel to Anatomy: A Love Story, Dana Schwartz's first novel. And the final novel to the duology.
It was narrated by the same performer as Anatomy. I like when it's consistent like that.
It picks up months after the stunning events of the first book, with Hazel doing surgical work without being an official surgeon. The patient we see her treating very much relates to our health care in present times. I love when authors make history come back around to us. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Dana also gives us an alternate history of Princess Charlotte, the granddaughter of King George III, the very King from Netflix's Bridgerton spinoff.
We also find out more of the supernatural element and how that plays into the story the author weaves. You can tell Dana Schwartz loves history and uses her fiction voice to rewrite it. If you haven't discovered her podcast, Noble Blood yet, give it a listen and you'll dive into history. It makes her novels that much richer.
I don't know what I was expecting going into this but it definitely wasn't a woman trying to become a doctor in an age where that was not allowed. I was unaware that this was a second book when I requested the ARC but I was glad to finally get the first book off of my TBR! My biggest complaint about this book is the love triangle, but also that I didn't like either men? One of them seemed like he wanted nothing to do with her, and the other just seemed Too Perfect. He was very quick to be like “Yup! We can do whatever you want!” and I like a little more angst in my romances. Overall this book was just ok for me, not sure if it was the writting, the historical setting, or the fact that the main character continuously got everything she wanted without much struggle. I know this author has written a few other books including a YA contemporary and a memoir and I'd definitely check them out to see if I like them more!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press, Wednesday Books, and NetGalley for providing me with an eBook copy to review
I'm so happy to have been able to read this. I never would have known it exists unless I looked into it some more.
It reminded me of Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalo ever so slightly, with a fmc who fought against the bounds of society to become a medical professional.
I think I should thank Dana for Hazel, maybe she will teach me to not give up my dreams just yet. I just have to take an unconventional route to get to where I want, Mechanical Engineering in the UK and then apply to medical schools anywhere that would see me as a viable option.
But about the actual book, I'm so happy that it ended the way it did. I do wish that there could have been more, more for Jack and Hazel in the sense that they could undo the effects of the tincture but I guess we can't all have what we want. Now they will just live a happy, youthful life with each other until Hazel discovers the way to undo the tincture. They may have a different happy ending but it's one everyone can agree will lead to happiness.
