Probably the best one volume history of Israel. On the plus side, the writing is generally clear and politics-free. The bits of poetry are welcome. On the negative side, the outlook is a little to the left of center but not obnoxiously so.
Who would have thought that a historical book could evoke such deep emotions in someone who doesn't typically enjoy history? Daniel Gordis' “Israel: A Concise History of a Nation Reborn” manages to do just that. The historical insights provided are incredibly valuable, especially the compelling narratives in the first and last sections of the book.
While the detailed accounts of the numerous wars might seem overwhelming at times, they are essential to grasp the full picture of Israel's complex history. The book doesn't shy away from the myriad challenges Israel has faced, nor does it gloss over the controversial actions taken by all parties involved. This balanced perspective is crucial for understanding the current situation by tracing its roots back to the very beginning.
Gordis ensures that readers are informed about the times when Israel, too, was responsible for unjust killings, but he also highlights how these actions were acknowledged and, in some cases, apologized for. This comprehensive and nuanced view of events that shaped the nation is vital for a full understanding.
Everyone can benefit from reading this book, but be prepared to invest time and focus. It's not a quick read, but the depth and breadth of knowledge you'll gain are well worth the effort.
