At the height of his show career, a beautiful Appaloosa became injured, and he moved from one owner to the next, ultimately experiencing severe abuse and neglect. A rescue group found Joey nearly dead from starvation--and blind. Then he came to Hope Reins, a ranch dedicated to helping kids who had been abused, emotionally wounded, or unwanted by teaching these children to care for rescued animals.mals.

Joey is a book about a blind horse and how he came to be at Hope Reins, an organization founded to help children who've suffered trauma. The true story shared by Jennifer Bleakley had me in tears in several places because it's just such a beautiful story. Many of the horses at Hope Reins have been rescued from situations as difficult and painful as the children they are there to serve. With love and patience, the staff at Hope Reins helps the horses learn to trust and heal, and the horses help the children who come there to heal as well. Y'all, if you want an amazing story about how our God can use the broken and hurting to bring healing to others and themselves, how He redeems a person or an animal the world has deemed worthless and uses them for good and His glory, this is the book for you.
It wasn't easy to read this book, especially after having spent the last few weeks fighting for my dog's life. But it's really sweet and a dear story about a horse that had everything stacked against him.
There was a lot of mention of their faith; I didn't care for the continual pounding of “it has to be a blind faith” which I don't agree with; but overall it's a very heartfelt and moving story, and I'm very glad to have discovered it.
