I have no idea why this book was added to Sonlight Curriculum Preschool. I have absolutely no idea why it is a multiple award winner. The illustrations are messy in an unattractive manner. The words just end and cut short in the middle of a thought. No lesson is taught. No future is sought. I see potential in what could be told but this book didn't accomplish it.
I had this book from the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library for kids under five. It is also recommended now, on Sonlight Curriculum.
Lot to love here, though I think there are just a few false notes (the spread of CJ and the music was too far out of the tone and pace of the story). Overall, a lovely and authentic story about a familial relationship that's not often shown in this way and gentle lessons on service, community, and attitude.
I'm still wondering about the claim for Newbery, though. Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for the final committee arguments.
A great children's book on celebrating diversity, seeing the bright sight of things, and giving back to your community.
