This I Can Read! Level 1 reader is apparently a vintage classic. It's on all the school lists in recommendation that I've found. For us it was through the recommendation of Memoria Press First Grade Curriculum and more specifically their StoryTime Treasures literature and reading curricula.
We're not quite where I would say she can read fully yet. And in turn this is perfectly appropriate for us after mostly completing the Kindergarten First Start Reading curricula (we're still trekking through Book D and have since picked up Logic of English Foundations - specifically in the beginning of Book B also as well as the Costco Beginning Bob Books set). We are still working with blends and two letter sounds but each day seems to be a jump in skill.
Little Bear is the perfect level with a handful of chapters to challenger he but also grant her confidence in her reading experience of truly finishing a whole book.
I'm enjoying experiencing this with the combination of StoryTime Treasures.
Short, nice stories. Remind me of The Little Bear and the Little Tiger :-)
Wonderful illustrations
I read this book for the Childhood Favourites Reading Challenge. When I learned about this challenge, I immediately thought of this book. It was the first book I ever read, so it holds a special place in my heart. I stood in the children's section of our local library today and read it, chuckling to myself as I read the text and enjoyed the pictures, especially of Little Bear and his “space helmet” made from a box and his mother surprising him and his friends with birthday cake!
