This was a very short read for the subject at hand, more like a prelude to a story that I'm dying to hear about. In tone and historic era it very much brought to mind [b:As Meat Loves Salt 271487 As Meat Loves Salt Maria McCann https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1398025759s/271487.jpg 1435622] one of my all time favorite novels and one that was a gateway to m/m for me. However as I said the brevity works against the book and there is much that we as readers have to bring to the game, which I'm not averse to, but I would have liked at least one open scene between Francis & Philip. It was all too elliptical in the end which was disappointing because I did enjoy the writing and this is a historical period that rarely gets visited in Romance.Almost everything between the MCs happens off page or in the last part a big swath of “then this happened” i.e. all tell and no show. *If you don't have a good grasp of the Cromwell era you may be at a loss as to what is going on. Fair warning.
