The empowering, inspiring, patriarchy-smashing first book by the TikTok and Spotify star Drew Afualo.
Drew Afualo is best known as the internet’s “Crusader for Women” and is at the head of a new generation of entertainment’s rising stars. Loud is part manual, part manifesto, and part memoir. It makes it clear that behind her fearsome laugh is a mission and a life philosophy, a strategy for self-confidence from the inside out, and a pathway to once and for all remove men from the center of how women and femmes think about themselves.
Afualo has amassed more than nine million followers across her social platforms. When she first started creating content in 2020, she realized that men on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and other apps were creating sexist content aimed at disparaging women, and also containing rampant fatphobia, racism, and other forms of bigotry, with very real-life consequences. It didn’t take long for her to step into the role of unofficial watchdog for misogyny, and her signature laugh is now recognized as a feminist call to arms, a summoning cry to rid the internet (and our hearts, minds, and lives) of “terrible men” and create a space to fight outdated patriarchal ideals.

Drew is definitely one of the good things that have come out of TikTok, and when it goes she will definitely be here to stay.
This book touched on a bit of everything when it comes to Drew's life before and after TikTok fame. Reflecting on her pick me self, and the growth she has done as an individual, Her place within samoan culture, Decentering men in society, and letting us into more of her personal life when it came to her relationship with her family and boyfriend.
My favorite part was Drew explaining her relationship with her sister. If you didn't know Drew's older sister Deison is a lesbian (and also HILARIOUS). She spoke about how Deison came out to her, and her behavior that followed. How it took sometime to mend that relationship. I thought it was very sincere, and spoke to the growth Drew went through to get to where she is now.
Some parts were repetitive, but within the content it was good to bring up again.
I was hoping to hear that contagious laugh in the audiobook!!!
But overall I absolutely enjoyed learning more about one of my favorite influencers!
Thank you Macmillan Audio for the ALC and Farrar, Straus and Giroux for the e-arc!
Props to writing a book, because so many people cannot manage it. However, if you're a fan of the energy from her online content, it doesn't fully make the translation into the written form.
I think the content is great for teenagers and anyone who's just dipping their toes into the ideas Drew discusses, but unfortunately most of it feels surface level, introductory. I also would have liked to hear more real world studies and initiatives referenced to balance the personal stories, but I suppose it is a memoir.
I'm glad she chose to narrate herself! It's always nice to hear celebrities give their own voice to the words they've written.
