holy exposition batman. i like the book so far, but the exposition is a LOT. like, thankfully it's somewhat integrated into the actual story, but even then it's like alec: "seregil, tell me about this random thing" seregil: [explains random thing for like two pages] alec: "that's so cool" there also haven't been any super strong character moments; both seregil and alec just feel like broadly sketched archetypes excepting a minor hint at seregil's daddy issues. i don't get any rich inner lives from any of the characters really beyond micum, and even he's just "jrpg old man character". apparently the first two books in this series were originally written as one, so maybe all of my problems are just down to slow pacing. we shall see. EDIT: you know what, I just remembered that seregil is also weirdly religious, so there's one point for something beyond being archetypal also, been loving the horror elements with seregil's nightmares and hauntings
