Jack Reacher has no place to go, and all the time in the world to get there, so a remote railroad stop on the prairie with the curious name of Mother's Rest seems perfect for an aimless one-day stopover. He expects to find a lonely pioneer tombstone in a sea of nearly-ripe wheat ... but instead there is a woman waiting for a missing colleague, a cryptic note about two hundred deaths, and a small town full of silent, watchful people. Reacher's one-day stopover turns into an open-ended quest leading to the most hidden reaches of the internet, and right into the nightmare heart of darkness. Any Reacher is good Reacher, but it feels like Lee Child is getting a little tired of Reacher. Would like to see Reacher use more ingenuity.
Lee Child has a winning formula with Jack Reacher. I guess these are one of my guilty pleasures, and it was inevitable that I would read #20. It was OK; I think that the formula is now getting rather tired. About time for few changes. Maybe an ongoing relationship with Chang? I also gather that Child is planning books about Reacher's early military career - they might be fun.
I've only read 9 Reacher books (including this one) but Make Me has to be in my top 3 favorite. Very enjoyable.
Not read one for a while. Airport. Picked it up. Just like another cup of coffee. Then read it. Turned the pages and looked at them. Not my favourite, not my least favourite. But somewhere in between. Mid-range Reacher. But mid-range Reacher is still better than another high end book of the month. Solid. Reliable. Comfortingly familiar. Reacher never gets less than three stars.
