Miracle in a Dry Season

Overall, I had a hard time with the narrative style, especially the POV. The author has a penchant for using the characters' proper names much more often than the appropriate pronoun, which made it awkward to know who the POV was from sometimes. Also, names change a lot between “Emily” and “Mom” in the same scene, but the “Ma” in the last third of the book. I also didn't appreciate Frank's penchant for profanity. Another thing that disturbed the feeling of reality was Perla's inexplicable “special talent” where she routinely cooked for 4-6 and fed 40 after cooking...that was just weird.

That said, I'm adding an extra star because the message of the story was just so good and really resonated with me. The message about leaving sin behind and walking forward together was very good.

Content: several instances of a profanity; crude term; someone accused of witchcraft; attempted rape by a preacher; someone has had a child out of wedlock and faces repercussions of that in society.
