It's not a super serious story because of an underlying, tongue-in-cheek flavor of “the grand comedy of things” as though the author is chuckling over the little follies of her characters. There are several sad or tragic circumstances which are mentioned, but because of the lighter writing style it doesn't hit the reader very hard.
Billy is the same lighthearted, selfless girl as before, loving others always before self. Sometimes she takes it to an extreme but mostly it just makes her a dear friend. I especially liked the addition of Alice and Mrs. Greggory halfway through.
Now maybe it won't take me ten years to pick up book three! (Granted, it did take me at least seven years to find this copy...)
