From a shaky start, this has grown into a very appealing series. Stewart does a very smart thing by contrasting how much has changed since 1916 (a woman is committed to an insane asylum simply because her husband wants her out of the way) with how little has changed (the election for sheriff features a blowhard who focuses on wild stories that have nothing to do with the real issues of the office). While Constance Kopp just wants to do the job that suits her so perfectly, there are many forces against her, and the end of the book suggests that she may be moving in a different direction. I hope this isn't the end of the series, because I have come to care about the stalwart Miss Kopp, her irascible pigeon-obsessed sister Norma, and her rapidly maturing baby sister Fleurette and I'd be happy to keep reading about their adventures. The fact that the characters are based on real-life women is just the icing on the cake.
