Somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars, but I'll go with 4 since I would definitely read the next book in the series. Lays on the feminism pretty heavily and somewhat pedantically, but there's no denying the reality that life wasn't easy for independent women in the early 20th century, especially those from low-income families, so Stewart has a lot of ammunition in that particular gun. I liked the focus on Fleurette and on two of the young women who spent time in Constance's jail, but there was a bit of POV hopping that took me out of the story a few times.
I love the fact that this series is based on a real-life “lady cop” and that the author uses newspaper articles of the time and other historical details to build such a rich portrayal. There are still many questions left to be answered about the Kopp sisters, and I hope Stewart is planning more installments about this unique character.
