No Nightingales
Suffice to say what led to this being described as a comic novel in 1944 is, majority, not funny anymore. I get the war satire considering the publication date, and it's perennially popular to mock aristocrats, the monarchy, government and the military, but I didn't really need the family farce on repeat, I didn't love women and suffragettes getting mocked. I did love the idea of two ghosts waiting for a royal visit haunting a place that estate agents were enternally plagued with trying to rent out, but those elements felt very much like a thin framework surrounding the author duo bouncing in and out of history wherever they wanted to poke fun, and most of the jokes were lame. Maybe 80 years ago they were less so. 🤷🏼♂️
