I don't know what to say about this novel. If you are expecting a novel about Jewish people in WWII, this isn't that novel. It is a mystical account of survival. Many of the characters are awful horrible people. I didn't like them and didn't care what happened to them. I did care for Lena, but at some point my care ran out. When is she going to get mad and demand better? I was also annoyed that there were so many parts where Lena kept telling the story, but wasn't there. It was an effort to create her as a mystic character. It was partially successful. It did increase my belief in her as a mystic, but it also annoyed me. That seems to be how the entire book goes. I kind of liked it and it kind of annoyed me.
Don't expect a realistic account of surviving the horrors of war. There isn't much that is realistic. It is lyrical, mystical heart breaking, and insane. You will probably love it or hate it. I can't imagine there are many in between.
