We seem to have entered into a new era of readily available, accessibly written books about science, and I am here for it! This is about geology and geological time, rocks and fossils and earth movement, but it's also about our attitude towards the landscape and how we interact with it. I was particularly taken with the sections about the palaeontologist and fossil collector Mary Anning (Ammonite is now on my To Watch list!), and the ridiculously creepy long-time nuclear waste warning messages (‘This place is not a place of honour, no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here, nothing valued is here'). Beautifully written, and one of those books that you finish with a long list of other books to look out for.
