Attempted reread in April 2023 - DNF - PG 228
Why?
Honestly, this book is leaps and bounds better than the previous one - but there's too many things that I am having trouble with for me to want to keep reading it. My biggest issue and - ultimately - the one that caused the DNF plug to get pulled is a personal pet peeve of mine: sections of a romance novel being told from perspectives outside the romance. I muscled my way through the first one and then was slapped with a second one and... I don't want to deal with it.
(Also, I made it through the angst-riddled first 45-50%. They are a happy, healthy couple. I do not need the outside drama-llama causing trouble. I'm not here for that.)
Original Review.
It's amazing how a shift in narration can change your opinion of a character so much. In the previous book, I didn't like Sam Shaw. Even after what happened years ago came to light, I didn't like him. However, because the previous book was better than I expected - by such a margin that it's not even funny - I decided to give this one a go. And, I gotta admit, I'm glad I did.
I adore both Sam and John and they are probably about the sweetest, nicest most kindhearted guys I've EVER read in a historical - or probably anything else, too. And I love how low angst their feelings are for each other. There's plenty of outside angst and drama, but none of it comes from our two guys and I love that.
