Why?

I'm not going to say this is a bad book - but it is just so dry and boring. Pages upon pages of descriptions don't do it for me in fantasy. They especially don't do it for me when the characters are lackluster and I find these characters to be specifically boring. The world building is good - a little heavy handed, I'd say, but over all believable and well thought out and doesn't read like someone just slapped Eastern trappings into a Western world. (Of course, my knowledge of this area is limited to what I learned in high school, so take that as you will.)

But, the simple fact is that, besides the unique setting, this is a standard fantasy story. We have the prince on the run from his (power-hungry, I'd guess) uncle and the woman that left her family life to become a wizard. cough I think I've read this story before.

Truthfully, though, if you like standard fare fantasy, (which I don't anymore) you could do a lot worse than this book (I have). Me, I think it's time for me to move on, especially as I barely managed ten pages a day since I started this book.
