Ike Randolph has been out of jail for fifteen years. The last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered, along with Isiah's white husband, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss. Derek's father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed his father was a criminal. Ike and Buddy Lee, two ex-cons with little else in common other than a criminal past and a love for their dead sons, band together in their desperate desire for revenge

WOW. I mean literally, WOW. I know I say that about a lot of books, but this one I'd give 6 stars if I could. this isn't a comfort book or a light-hearted read, but if you find you're in the headspace for a deeply written story with so much to offer, Cosby's book should be at the top of your list.

literally black commentary, lgbtq+ commentary, revenge, and graphic murder? what else could you want
Almost 4 stars but not quite... This was a good, engaging story, if a bit predictable to me. I liked the characters a lot and I found their inner lives and how they developed throughout compelling. The writing style was pretty bland (even for me and god knows I don't care for overly poetic or descriptive language) and uninteresting, and the overuse of “he said” “Ike said” “she said” with no variation whatsoever almost drove me crazy.
I tried to step out of my comfort zone a little bit with this since I was reading myself into a hardcore reader's block with my usual fare, and I had a good time, but I don't think it was “for me” really...
