Rumble, Vol. 1: What Color of Darkness?

The art was all right. Not my favorite style but decent enough. Given my predilections, I should like the art for ‘Chew' far less than I do, but it just fits so well that I DO like it. This art isn't as grotesque, but it's fairly angular. The people (almost all men, so far a total sausage fest) aren't particularly aesthetically pleasing, but the art works beautifully for the monsters.

Unfortunately, the story is a bit dull. It's not bad. But the main characters are bland, a bit trite, and Bobby might as well be a character from lit fic. He's a sadsack loser whose girlfriend just dumped him–but he's also not a bad guy! and he's in over his head with all this god-action stuff! Whatever shall he do? Bobby is a tedious, overdone character. His bff Del is a little better, because he's at least somewhat amusing. Rathraq is also dull, even though he's our god-hero. But I'll take him over Bobby.

I feel like there is so much ridiculous fantasy name-dropping without context that it becomes a trifle difficult to follow. I realize that's part of the plot of one of the chapters, but it's not particularly fun for the reader.

So, I'll give the next volume a try, just because, but so far this is only a meh Image read, even though I tend to love Image Comics.
