Known for making up his own rules of right and wrong, Texas Ranger Sam "Wildcard" MacGregor takes what he wants when he wants it, especially when it comes to women. But seduction is the last thing on his mind the moment he stumbles across an Hispanic beauty crouching in fear beside a burned-out wagon. And it doesn't take long before he realizes the woman the townsfolk call "cursed" is hiding secrets too dangerous to face alone.Isabella may look feminine and unassuming, but she's hell in a bodice with gunslinging skills to match any man's. But though she knows not to give Sam her heart as readily as she offers him her lush body, Isabella is certain she sees in Sam what he can barely glimpse in himself--a virtuous man dropped deep into a hard country bent on breaking him. A man who, under it all, craves a passionate woman willing to risk everything...

So, I'm going to start with the narration by Jason Adams. I tried listening to this book multiple times in the past and had trouble getting past the first couple minutes. Mr Adams' slow drawl narration just wasn't working for me. This time around, I decided to speed it up and oh that made a world of a difference. It's still not my favorite performance, but once it was moving at a somewhat more normal speed, it was tolerable.
On to the story, I listened to the first book in the series and I admit I was curious about Hell's Eight, so it was time to move on to book two. Book two followed along the same lines that book one did and now I'm realizing that this might not be the series for me. There's a lot of gratuitous, descriptive sex and not so much character or romance development. I kept finding myself spacing out while listening and not really caring that I was missing large chunks of the story. It wasn't horrible, but it just didn't have enough substance to really keep my attention. I'm not sure I'm going to continue with this series... past the fact I already have book 3 in my library.
