It's not often that I pause a book because I got too emotionally engaged while reading it. “She Would Be King” from Wayétu Moore joined that club multiple-time. Leynes shared a great in-depth review (beware, spoils) if you want to know much more, however, don't hesitate to plunge into it without knowing anything other than the genre is historical fantasy, there is magic, and the setting is pre-Civil War.
Liberia book around the world. Hard to keep up as it kinda went all over the places
I loved getting to know the characters, but the pacing felt weird.

Magical realism? Reminded me of Nalo Hopkinson The Salt Roads because of the spirit action, time period, etc. Interesting look at the history of the beginning of Liberia - although I would have gone for a super-hero team up of our three main gifted folks in the world.
