Holmes investigates the disappearance of a champion racehorse and the murder of its trainer. All taking place in the atmospheric setting of Dartmoor. The tale is not overly complicated with baffling clues and as such it's one of the better Holmes stories. Little by little Holmes puts together pieces of what might have happened by questioning servants and stable boys. Then dealing with the owner of a nearby estate who knows something about the whole episode. It also features some of Conan Doyle's most effective plotting, hinging on the “curious incident of the dog in the night-time:”
