A strong book about war. Very unlike most books on war I've read; this tells how the World War II appeared to Russian women, who enlisted and served in many different positions, from nurses, cooks and laundrywomen to partisans, snipers and front line soldiers.
Alexievich has interviewed lots of women for this book. There are many shared threads in the stories: women weren't always welcome to join the army, and got ridiculed, mocked and insulted during and after the war. War's not fair, and particularly so for women.
Another fine example of war literature that will make war seem very unattractive.
