When all my goodreads recommendations were suddenly urban fantasies about women in their 40s having a midlife crisis, I started to get pretty annoyed. Look GR, I know I'm inching up on 40 but are you trying to tell me something? I went ahead and gave this book a shot anyway and holy crap I'm glad I did. I love just about everything by Elizabeth Hunter, and this is no different. I relate HARD to the main character Robin and I devoured this book in a day. Can't wait to read the others.
Fun mashup of Women's Fiction and paranormal, with 3 perimenopausal BFFs all developing psychic abilities after a near-tragic accident. The tone is warm but occasionally snarky, and the plot moves swiftly as Robin, who can now see ghosts, tries to discover the identity of the mysterious man who saved the friends from drowning. There's a bit of a “can this marriage be saved” subplot, and Robin's new powers allow her to discover some long-held family secrets, but the emphasis is on the friendship and finding meaning in a middle-aged life.
The remaining books of the trilogy focus on caustic single mom Val, and sweet widow Monica. I'm definitely ready to spend more time with these three women.
