Jeff Lemire's acclaimed new series introduce Gus, a rare new breed of human/animal hybrid who was raised in isolation following a pandemic that struck a decade earlier. Now, with the death of his father, he's left to fend for himself . . . until he meets a hulking drifter named Jepperd, who promises to help him. Jepperd and Gus set out on a post-apocalyptic journey into the devastated American landscape to find 'The Preserve,' a refuge for hybrids.

Very very very good. Pretty much anything Jeff Lemire writes is engaging and different, so I picked Sweet Tooth from issue one. The story has only gotten better from there, and I've felt like every comic I put on my pull list in 09 has let me down aside from this and a few scant others.
Definitely one of the weirder dystopian works I've ever read. It suffered from the traditional “Vertigo vol 1” problem of too much setup, not enough story. Probably worth reading if you're going to be willing to commit to the whole series - it felt like it'll take awhile to pay this story off.
