Every chapter flows in a similar way, namely to show where something fits into the Swing hierarchy, details the concepts and architecture behind it, then iteratively customises it for interesting uses. Beginners will want to pick up something more suited to their level as this one really does focuses in-depth on how to maximise the potential of Swing's components.
