If I'm being perfectly honest, I don't read a lot of romance - my experience of romance novels in the past have been that the actual stories are not that strong. With 2014 being a year of reading out of my “comfort zone”, I decided to give the genre another try, and have found it to be a rewarding experience.
The Billionaire's Demands is the second romance I've read this year, and it was a surprisingly satisfying read. While it certainly followed the traditional romance trajectory - two beautiful people drawn unwillingly but inexorably toward passion and lifelong love - the novel doesn't just depend on a “formula” to tell it's story. The characters have real strengths and weaknesses, and their relationship felt like it made sense. The conflicts that arise are logical within the story, and the the main characters work through them by doing more than just jumping into bed. I am impressed with the author's storytelling and characterization skills, and found this novel to be extremely entertaining and satisfying.
If novels like this are the future of romance, count me in.
(I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via Netgalley for review in exchange for my honest opinion.)
